Chapter 15
She was thinking about the meeting that evening with Harry as she was completing her assigned work from Papa later that day. She tried to concentrate on the work but she was nervous. It would be nice to have more information about Mama and her involvement in those articles. She put the thoughts out of her mind and focused on her work and got it finished before the dinner hour.
Dinner was the normal noisy affair with Miss May and Miss Marjorie talking about the past and the kids talking all at once. Emma sat there thinking about her evening meeting. The person she was meeting was a stranger and she thought it best to not go on her own, but Papa was called out of town on a consulting job so he wouldnât be available and Tim was in a night class that evening.
She would like to get Tony to come with her, but, she thought, it was probably too soon to ask him for a favor. Thoughâ¦I might just wander by Tonyâs apartment building on the way to the library and if I ran into him accidentally, that would beâ¦. She shook her head. No, Iâm better than that and I wonât use Tony in that way.
She was wearing her blue and red plaid skirt with red trim and a red shirt. She slipped on her jacket and grabbed her hat. She made sure both of her knives were in place. Emma heard a tap on her door, she called âCome in.â She saw it was Dora. âHey, whatâs up?â
Dora saw Emma getting ready to go out. âSister, where are you heading out to this time of night? Isnât it a bit late?â
âJust headed to the library.â The path to the library was an easy path from the boarding house.
âLibrary?â she asked as she sat on the bed with a bounce. âLooking for a new book?â Dora asked curiously.
It was time to tell Dora. âNo, Iâm going to see if I can find some additional information on a case.â She pulled out the articles she had found in Mamaâs chest. She handed them to Dora while explaining her suspicions and similarities between them. She also explained where she had gone that day and the note placed in her pocket.
âThis person who put this in your pocket. Whatâs his name again?â
âHarry. Harry Morganâ
âSure, but why all the secrecy? Does this really involve Mama?â Dora was interested in anything that might involve Mama.
âIâm not sure,â Emma said, âbut I would like to know why she kept these and why Daniel doesnât want to talk to me about her. It is obvious that she had something to do with these articles and maybe the outcomes.â
âSister, shouldnât you take someone with you? You donât know this person,â said Dora worriedly.
âWell, I thought about Tim but heâs in school and Papaâs out of town. I think itâll be fine and Iâll be out in the open at the library,â answered Emma truthfully.
Begrudgingly Dora nodded and sent her on her way.
